Part 61 training at Redlands Municipal Airport (KREI) with a dedicated instructor in an IFR-equipped Cessna.
The rating that turns a fair-weather private pilot into one who can file IFR, climb through the marine layer and fly an approach to minimums. Train with an instrument instructor (CFII) in an IFR-equipped Cessna 172 at Redlands, with the ILS and RNAV approaches at Riverside, San Bernardino and Ontario minutes away.
The path
IFR Ground School: Charts, the IFR regulations, weather theory, instrument systems and the knowledge test — online at your own pace, with your CFII on the whiteboard for the hard parts.
Attitude Instrument Flying: The scan, partial panel and unusual attitudes, then holds, intercepts and tracking on the VOR and GPS — under the hood in the practice area.
Approaches & IFR Cross-Country: ILS, localizer, VOR and RNAV approaches at Riverside, San Bernardino and Ontario, then real clearances in the system on the 250 NM cross-country.
Checkride Prep: Three hours of polish in the two months before the test, a mock oral on charts and procedures, and a mock ride with every kind of approach.
