Flight School in Redlands, CA: How to Choose One

Choosing a flight school in Redlands, or anywhere, is a bigger decision than it looks. You'll spend dozens of hours and a meaningful amount of money with the people and airplanes you pick, and the right fit makes a real difference to how fast you finish and how much you enjoy it. Here are eight questions worth asking any school before you sign up, along with how we answer them at Cornerstone Flight Academy.

1. Part 61 or Part 141?

Both lead to the same FAA certificate. Part 141 schools follow an FAA-approved, structured course, which suits some students and is required by some programs. Part 61 training is more flexible: lessons are built around your schedule and progress, which suits many people training around work or school.

At Cornerstone: we train under Part 61, with a structured curriculum paced to you.

2. Will I have the same instructor?

Continuity matters more than most new students realize. An instructor who knows exactly where you are in the syllabus doesn't spend the first half hour of each lesson finding out. Ask whether you'll have a dedicated instructor, and what happens if they leave.

At Cornerstone: you're paired with a dedicated instructor from your first lesson through your certificate, and we keep enrollment limited so your instructor can stay focused on your progress.

3. What airplanes will I fly, and can I actually book them?

A fleet is only as useful as its availability. Ask how many airplanes the school has, how far ahead students usually have to book, and what happens when an airplane is down for maintenance.

At Cornerstone: we fly a Cessna 172 and a Cessna 150, both IFR-equipped, so the panel you learn on carries straight into an instrument rating. You book online.

4. Who maintains the airplanes?

Ask how maintenance is handled, how quickly problems get fixed, and whether airplanes fly with known issues waiting for a slot in the shop.

At Cornerstone: we're pilot- and mechanic-owned, with in-house and partner maintenance on the field at Redlands, and we plan maintenance ahead rather than waiting for things to break.

5. How is pricing structured?

Hourly rates are hard to compare until you know what's in them. Ask whether rates are wet or dry, whether they're billed on Hobbs or tach time, what membership or monthly fees apply, whether there are block discounts, and how instruction is billed. Then ask for an estimate of the total cost to a certificate.

At Cornerstone: our rental rates are dry, with block discounts at 10 and 25 hours, a flat annual fee and no monthly dues. Our training page includes a line-by-line cost estimate.

6. How does scheduling work?

Training goes fastest when you fly two or three times a week. Ask whether the school can realistically support that, how cancellations work, and what happens on bad-weather days.

7. Where is the airport, and what's the airspace like?

Training at a busy towered airport means time spent waiting for clearances and holding short. Training at a quiet field with nothing around means you'll travel to learn tower procedures.

At Cornerstone: Redlands Municipal (KREI) is a non-towered field, so more of your lesson time is spent flying. San Bernardino, Riverside and Chino are close by for towered-airport practice, and the mountains next door give you real terrain and weather to learn in.

8. Can I fly with you before I commit?

Any good school should be glad to take you up for a first lesson. It's the best way to find out whether you like flying, the instructor and the airplane before you commit to more.

Questions to ask yourself

Before you choose, be honest about three things. How often can you really fly, week in and week out? What's your budget, and how will you pace it? And what's the goal: a private certificate for fun, or the first step toward a career? A school that suits a weekend flyer may not suit someone aiming for an airline, and the other way round. The right school is the one that fits the way you'll actually train.
